The Magnum S3175 (S3 with 175 Watts of power) is designed for the entry level amateur user, and when the transmitter is operated in the US/territories, a licensed amateur operator must be present.

The Magnum S3175 is a combination microprocessor and phase-lock loop (PLL) contolled radio, combining high RF performance with the user-friendly front panel. It is basically engineered for mobile use but can easily adapt to fixed station operation.

This radio is designed to work on any 13.8 volt DC, negative ground source.  If you have a low battery or worn generator/alternator, this will diminish the performance of the tranceiver. 

The tranceiver will operate using any standard 50-ohm ground plane, vertical, mobile whip, long wire or similar antenna, as long as the antenna is rated at 100 watts PEP minimum.  The back of the radio has a standard SO239 type antenna connector, and PL259 and high grade coax (RG213, RG58A/U or Mini RG-8 recommended) is required for connection.  A ground plane antenna provides greater coverage and should be used for fixed station-to-mobile operation, with a non directional antenna used for mobile installation.
